Oh noes, bad grammar on teh internetz.

Point out one sentence, whos information value got corupted beyond the ability of reconstruction. Or better, tell me where a listener would find it difficult to get the meaning of it, if it were spoken language.

EDIT:On second thought, there are only like 4 errors in 4 sentences, wow, compare that to my school english, thats a hell of an improvement. Oh well, screw languages, all hail natural sciences!

Lol, the ewe-toob video was, well rather great, kinda reminds me of the old bill nye music videos at the end of his shows, terrible musically but rather educational, and it's catchy too, so you won't forget.

As for someone killing themselves in fear of the world ending and everyone dying, where does that begin to make sense?

Oh no i'm going to die no matter what, so let me kill myself!!!!

screw that, if I knew i was going to die and the world was going to end, i'd be robbing banks and running down main with an AK, yes i realize if the world was gonna end i'd have no use for said money, but it'd worth the rush.

The part where the fear of death and destruction comes in is where those who are uneducated about said experiments come up with some sort of believable but not in the realm of reality theory on something that "could" occur, never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Take in to consideration that english is not everyones first language, and it is one of the harder languages to pick up on, particularly in writing rather than speaking.

You are perfectly exhibiting the intolerance and arrogance that makes the rest of the world hate us americans, and if you're not american you're simply exhibiting the same degree of arrogance that makes americans hate you. You see, people are always looking for a reason to hate each other, when you give them such an easy reason to, you simply amplify the situation.

editbecause i messed up on the wording of something.

Let me put it this way then.

You have a greater chance of discovering Optimus Prime and Superman and them both making out right now as I type this than the LHC destroying the world.

It is impossible, from a physics standpoint.

Of course, you'd have to have more than a high school education and not just spouting off what other uneducated people from the Internet say to know this, but hey! I suppose if there's people in NY who don't know the month and day 9/11 happened, anything is possible for stupidity.

OK to put it into perspective for you Joe Fierce:

It is impossible, from a scientific standpoint for this machine to automagically destroy the world. You do realize that the LHC is not the first particle accelerator we have ever built, in fact we have quite a few of them, and a lot of them are running right now. We're still alive, yes? You know why that is? Because they aren't strong enough to create a black hole, and were they (our strongest one hasn't at all, so...) they would create a microscopic black hole (at best) which would take so long to grow, our solar system would already be dead from our Sun when it turns Red Giant in 5 billion years (unable to explode in Supernova (not enough mass)), cause planet rotations to screw up, and vaporize all the water and life on the planet before the Black Hole ever got a chance to grow into something deadly.

Not that it matters because those MBH's would wind up flying out into outer space at near the speed of light. MBH's are about as deadly as wind. They wind up evaporating from Hawking radiation.

This is all assuming the LHC somehow automagically gets enough energy to create even a MBH (this is a lot of energy, just for a microscopic one (mind you, this means you can't even see it.)).

Some (not standard) extensions of the Standard Model say the LHC could tap into extra spatial dimensions and create over 60 MBH's a minute, but they'd all go flying into space at near the speed of light and evaporate anyways.

Oh noez the world is doomed.

Basically you're trying to tell me that this machine (which we have many others of its type running for quite some time now) has a "chance" to destroy the world and that all the leading scientists and physicists (including Stephen Hawking.) are all wrong.

Now I know it's the internet, good sir, but somehow I do not think you are beyond the intellectual and scientific level of Stephen Hawking. I'm sorry, the machine is harmless. Anyone who tells you otherwise, is just a person who either wants to see the world burn for the hell of it, or a person who needs to go read some books. Or maybe both.

Haha I don't disagree with ya Necrid I personally know its harmless, but the fear stems from the fact that this Hadron Collider is much more powerful than any previously built. I can't remember exactly how much more so (still not even close to enough to create black holes) but that's where the seed for fear comes from.

If the very first particle accelerator had been as well publicized then I'm sure there would of been just as much hype then, and maybe less of it now.

We don't even have enough energy to create a microscopic black hole actually.

Technically the LHC could, like I said, several extensions (not overly popular, but hey!) to the Standard Model say the LHC could in fact create MBH's at a rate of 1 per second because of extra spatial dimensions etc etc etc.

It just doesn't matter if it creates a MBH or not.

What matters is if it changes (we should stop using the word create technically since energy can't be created nor destroyed only changed) the energy into a black hole that won't dissipate from Hawking radiation 0.0000000000000000...1 seconds after it's created, which is impossible.

Last time I checked (which was a few days ago)

According to the standard model, the LHC's energy output is too low to create anything. Well I'm a chem person

Yes, this is extensions to the standard model (beyond it). Other theories. The Standard Model does say it can't, but that isn't to say it isn't possible.

True

But a hole created would be a size of rougly one planck mass. It would just dissipate through radiation instantly, since the smaller the hole, the faster it dissipates. IF Hawking radiation is real of course.

Yes of course, I'm just saying that alternate theories state it's possible. That's all I meant. :P

This is where some guy goes HURR IT'LL BLOW UP THE WORLD SEE THIS IS ALL THEORY!!!, as if everything they take for granted (gravity), isn't. :P

Actually my opinion is

we are screwed ONLY IF our understanding of physics is 100% wrong.

Well, we've done pretty well so far. It's one of those things were once you really prove one thing exists you wind up proving 90000 other things. Higgs Boson for example.

My only hope is that the greater understanding of higgs and these particles will lead to a discovery on how to harness that energy. Very unlikely, but would be awesome as it's basically free energy ( well, not exactly free. But compared to what we have now it is )

Most likely not :P

As for it ending the world...lawlzers.
